What is Aikido?

Aikido is most commonly translated as “the way of harmony”.

Do is the Tao, “the way”.

Ki translates as spiritual energy; and the most all-encompassing meaning of “ai” is harmony.

Harmony is blending with our environment by changing difficulties into joy and conflict into peace.

The purpose of Aikido training is to bring forth our true nature, to develop spiritual power, our innate heritage. Within the inner realms of Aikido lies the world of Kototama (sound), it can be described as the invisible world of spirit, the divine plan, and the creative energy of life including the human spiritual constitution. The kototama exists only as expressed through the form, function, and feeling of the relative world. Each kototama, whether spoken, thought, or expressed through movement, influences us both physically and spiritually. The power of kototama is experienced through chanting and prayer. Studying movement as spirit and consciousness is also the study of the kototama. Aikido is based on the kototama principle.
